1/48 WW1 German Pilot/Officer
AC485F1/48 WW1 German Pilot/Officer

1/48 WW1 German Pilot/Officer

Sculpted By : Jim Raynor

As with most German officer pilots, he wears the standard officers double breasted tunic with a red collar, this was the standard garment for any officer of line and it was also very popular with airforce personnel. His jacket is a store bought mens driving jacket of thick single skin hide leather, usually brown or black in any tone of colour. His hat is again a standard officers cap for front line issue wear. In battle these looked very familiar to the WW2 officers Fifty Mission crusher and sagged readily.
He wears thick knitted grey socks over his breaches, though sometimes white were worn and his boots are black leather ankle boots and these sometimes faded to brown quickly dependent on the quality of the leather dye.

1/48 WW1 RFC Observer/Gunner

Sculpted By : Jim Raynor

He is wearing the Fug overboots as per the fighter pilot, as made by Harrods of London. Though this time hes is sporting another popular garment, again supplied by the likes of Harrods and other mens outfitters at the time. The massive fur coat was a must for open cock pit 2 seat aircraft where an observer might have to hang out of it for hours. These were often called gorilla or grizzly coats, as they resembled the animals when wearing them they were in fact made of bearskin or alpaca or similar thick long fur.
These often came in a variety of colours and would often include variations on one garment such as stripes or patches . His helmet is the RFC MKI non coweled type and sports shearling mittens designed with three fingers, in order to operate radios or 303 machine guns.

1/48 WW2 FAA Pilot Cold Climate

Sculpted By : Jim Raynor

In the freezing Atlantic ocean,  many aviators lost their lives due to inadequate clothing in the early years of naval aviation.
This led the Royal Navy and RAF developing and using the famous Irvine flight jacket, this jacket is of mid brown shearling colour and is much thicker and heavier than the more commonly seen USAAF B-3 sheepskin.
These jackets were very heavy and were issued to the RN crews for use over water, as well as standard cold weather issue conditions. His trousers are standard officers black trousers and shoes again standard for officers. He wears a scarf tucked inside his jacket collar and his parachute harness , is the Irvine seat type with twist quick release barrel buckle,  the seat type is made by Irvine (not related to the flight jacket).
His gloves again are made of kid leather and his helmet is the same as Navy Type-C. He also wears the 1939 or 1940 Mae West life preserver.

1/48 WW2 FAA Pilot Hot Climate

Sculpted By : Jim Raynor

His parachute harness is of the Irvin seat type with twist quick release barrel buckle. His Mae West is of the 1939-1940 pattern (these are very similar except the 1939 is much paler in colour – almost a tan rather than a distinctive yellow), as the navy often had to make do with much older equipment as new supply of improved models went directly to the RAF.
He wears stanard officers shoes in black leather and Khaki/tropical airtex shirt and trousers for officers, his gloves are of the short type in single ply soft kid leather. Sometimes these were substituted with driving gloves bought directly or privately from a gentlemans outfitters.
His helment is of the C-type, this although looks very similare to the B-type “Zipear” of Battle of Britain fame is a very different helmet, this is the standard RAF C-type leather helmet with “Zipears” added to accommodate the Navy electronics. These helmets were worn by the Royal Navy and RAF Coastal command exclusively and the goggles are of the MKII type.

AC321FRFC Pilot

RFC Pilot 1/32 scale

Sculpted by: Jim Raynor

The RFC Pilot is wearing a Sidcot suit with fur lining, which is shown around his collar. The thigh length over boots are made of sheepskin and wool lined (made by Harrods department store)

The boots were often brushed with tar which made the boots water resistant and hard wearing. The boots were held up on the leg using a suspension button on the thigh.

The helmet also shows that this had fur lining as well. The gloves are a three finger mitten type. Thr figure also has all authentic seams and details within the uniform
