1/48 RAF Fast Jet Crew 1980 - 90's (2 Crew)
Sculpted By : Jim Raynor
This crew has on standard Nomex flight suits and “speed jeans” or anti-G-suits in green nylon over it. By this time no scarves were being worn, though a “norgy shirt” or Norwegian army shirt is very popular even now.
The MK22c life preserver is of the full jacket type. This is a nylon open weave with built in life collar in green nylon. Gloves are commonly white kid leather until the 90’s, and then this switched to green.
One of the crew is wearing a “bone dome” or flight helmet; this is often green or white though crews have been known to decorate them in a single colour (such as yellow or red etc.) but never to with elaborate designs like the USA. This crew represents crews that flew the Buccaneer, Canberra, and PR9
Supplied as resin parts, require assembly and painting
1/48 RAF Fast Jet Crew 1960 - 70's (2 Crew)
This crew wears the blue cotton flight suit of the early jet age and this suit saw use throughout the late 50’s and through to the mid 70’s. In some squadrons it was a cotton suit with a light open weave, however this could be sprayed with fire retardant spray if needed. Over this he is wearing a predecessor to the G-Suit of the more commonly known type, this is a MK4 pressure Jerkin by Beaufort. Again in blue but a more royal blue than the grey blue of the RAF suit. This had an inflatable built in Mae West in orange around the neck. This suit was used for high altitude operations and fast jet crews like the Lightning, Buccaneer, Canberra etc. The boots are black leather, though often a rubber over boot could be used, this simply buttoned up over the shoe for use in aircraft ladders in slippery conditions. Though this was most probably originally part of the nuclear biological protection gear and adopted by an innovative aviator. One of the crew is wearing the full “hardshell” assembly of the MKI fighter helmet or “bonedome” as it is called in the RAF. These were often painted silver in the earlier period, though green examples exist. This is a 2 piece affair designed with a separate hard head protection. This can be seen sported by the crewman with the bag who has his hard shell in a cloth sack, sometimes known as a “bowling ball bag”, due to its spherical shape where it contained a helmet for protection until in the aircraft, these helmets were often used without the hardshell too. Scarves were common still in this era, though these were required to be worn tucked into the pressure Jerkin and were normally green or white towelling.

RNAS Pilot 1/48 scale
The RNAS pilot is wearing a special Royal Navy flying coat, these were either black or dark blue, however there are no surviving private collections, so no-one really knows, but the best guess is black as it would have been the most popular.
Buttons were domed and gild plated as per the standard naval service tunic. The coat was made from a heavy weave fleece wool, which are similar to the wool shirts that are available today/ albeit in a heavier weave. He had a lambs wool collar which would have been added by a tailor as the standard collar was found to be inadequate.
He wears shoulder boards to show what rank he is and has leather shirling 3 finger mittens. His helmet is the RFC/RN full cowl type Mk.1 whilst his trousers are simple RN officers trousers and service shoes. The figure has all the authentic seams and details within the unifrom.
RFC Pilot 1/48 scale
The RFC Pilot is wearing a Sidcot suit with fur lining, which is shown around his collar. The thigh length over boots are made of sheepskin and wool lined (made by Harrods department store)
The boots were often brushed with tar which made the boots water resistant and hard wearing. The boots were held up on the leg using a suspension button on the thigh.
The helmet also shows that this had fur lining as well. The gloves are a three finger mitten type. Thr figure also has all authentic seams and details within the uniform
